How and why did you decide to go into business? Most business owners start their businesses because they desire personal freedom. They want to be their own boss. They believe a certain business idea could be their ticket to fortune. They are not just infatuated with these ideas, they are in LOVE, a state of romantic bliss. When you started your business, you were probably full of passion and excitement. Yes, like that first dance you shared in the high school prom. Pretty soon your family and friends were begging you to please, stop talking about your business, but nonetheless, I'm proud of you.
Well, how about rekindling that romance for a change? Think of it like a marriage - you and your business have stuck it out through thick and thin. You've burned the midnight oil. You were duly rewarded. Your love of the business has ebbed and flowed. Ask yourself now, are you in love with your business still or has it just turned into a partner, a faithful companion?
If you answered the latter, here are some suggestions for you to rekindle the flame.
Cool off and give yourself a break. Who knows, maybe that time off is what you need to rekindle your passion. Take a little time off and reconnect with the reasons that you started your business. Find that excitement and light that spark just like back in the old days. Maybe you need a reboot. Really let yourself feel what you felt at the start.
Ask yourself what you really love about your business. Some aspects of work you may enjoy, while others, you'd rather mail it in. Focus on the good things. Learn to take consolation in what you have. If work is hard, then find ways to facilitate things and give you and your staff a break. Delegate the work you don't enjoy. Get outside help. Do what you love and give the rest away.
Strategize. You may be feeling discombobulated by what's going on, so you want to plan your escape route out of your state of flux. Write it down, and make your penmanship legible. Grab your old business plan as well. Look at that all-important first page, when you wrote about what a wonderful business you have, probably to the point of braggadocio. If you have a plan in writing (don't type it as it's less personal), you can gain some of that control back. Or better yet, most of that control.
Share your excitement. Once you've come back from the depths of business-related ennui, tell people you know about how you found the pot of gold underneath the rainbow. Just like you probably did in high school, when you told all your buddies about that amazing date you had the other night. Let people know about your great emancipation. Just like it is when you're in love with that special person in your life, being in love with your business is a great feeling to share, as it uplifts everybody else around you, not the least you yourself.
